The AS Val is a silenced assault rifle of Soviet origin. It was developed in the 1980's to be used in urban combat and the reconnaissance role. The name AS stands for "Avtomat Special'nyj", which is Russian for "special automatic rifle". The nickname "Val" means "shaft" and refers to the prominent silencer. The T-62 is a main battle tank of Soviet origin. It was developed in the late 1950's as a follow on to the succesful T-55. The T-62 was produced in large quantities in the 1960's and played an important role in the Cold War. In several areas the T-62 is an improvement over the T-55. However, the slight increase in performance does not justify the production costs that are twice that of the T-55. The introduction of newer tanks made the T-62 quickly obsolete as the primary Soviet tank, a role which would be fulfilled by the later T-72.
The KSM-65 is an early Cold War era coastal defense gun of Soviet origin. Development started in the later stages of World War 2 as the S-65. Although the S-65 successfully passed Soviet state trials in 1948, the decision was made in 1951 to base the new coastal defense system on the 100mm KS-19 anti-aircraft gun and add an advanced off-mount fire control system for the entire battery.
The 2K8 Falanga is an early Cold War era anti-tank guided missile of Soviet origin. The Falanga is notable for being the first Soviet anti-tank guided missile to be launched from helicopters. Due to the complexity and expensive design Falanga was not as widely adopted and exported than planned during the design phase. The NATO reporting name is "AT-2 Swatter".
