The M203PI is a modern era under barrel grenade launcher of US origin. It was developed as a private venture by RM Equipment, which saw a market for adding under barrel grenade launchers to patterns of firearms often lacking those.
The M203PI essentially is an M203A1 type launcher with the shorter 9 inch barrel. What makes the PI different is the wide variety of mounting bracket options for many patterns of assault rifles. The AR-15 pattern brackets come in rifle can carbine length. Since these used the bayonet lug as front mount they do not require a step cut barrel, making it compatible with various exported patterns of carbines. Other mounting brackets include the Steyr AUG bullpup rifle for which no under barrel grenade launcher was available. Other patterns include the H&K G3 and Kalashnikov series of rifles.
A standalone conversion kit was also developed, featuring a pistol grip and foldable adjustable length shoulder stock. In this setup it is more akin to the HK 69 or M79 in role and function.
The firepower of the M203PI is similar to the regular M203. A wide variety of 40x46mm low velocity grenades can be fired. Due to the distance that the barrel slides forward upon reloading not all types of grenades can be loaded due to their length. An experienced operator can fire 5 to 7 rounds per minute. The effective range against point targets is 150 m. Area targets can be engaged out to 400 m.
The M203PI was adopted in limited numbers by a wide variety of nations. Adoption in larger quantity seems to be limited to users of the Steyr AUG.
Original variant of the M203PI that can be mounted on a rifle using a weapon family specific bracket. Such brackets include AR-15 rifle and carbine length, Kalashnikov lower handguard replacement, Steyr AUG front grip replacement, H&K G3 pattern bracket and others.
Newer variant of the M203PI with top rail that can be attached to a Picatinny accessory rail.
Standalone conversion unit for the M203PI with its proprietary mounting system. Introduced in 1996. The module features a pistol grip, folding stock with AR-15 pattern retractable stock, a leaf sight and Picatinny accessory rails for mounting a sight unit.

The M203PI follows the design of the M203, but differs in mounting options.
