Description

Introduction

The SR-2 Veresk is a sub machine gun of Russian origin. It was developed by TsNIITochMash in the mid 1990's by request of the Russian intelligence service FSB. The SR-2 is a sub machine gun that complements the earlier SR-1 Gyurza pistol and uses the same non-standard ammunition. The name SR-2 stands for "Spetsialnaya Razarbotka 2", which is Russian for "special design 2". The nickname Veresk is Russian for a heather plant.

Design

The SR-2 is an unusual sub machine gun since it is based on the SR-3 Vikhr compact assault rifle. Although the layout is similar to many other sub machine guns its internal mechanism is not. The SR-2 is gas operated, uses a long stroke gas piston and has a rotating bolt. The magazines are inserted in the pistol grip and a vertical grip can be attached at the front. Most of the weapon is made out of metal, including the folding stock. The heatshield, vertical grip and pistol grip are made out of plastics.

Firepower

The SR-2 fires the 9x21mm SP-10 round that was initially developed for the SR-1 pistol. It uses 20 or 30 round magazines of which the 20 round ones are most common. The SR-2 is a select-fire weapon and has a cyclic rate of fire of 900 rpm. The effective range is 100 meters, although targets at 200 meters may be engaged by firing multiple times.

Users

The SR-2 is in limited use with various Russian law enforcement and counter terrorist units and is available for export.

Variants of the SR-2

The SR-2 comes in two main variants. The early production model is the original SR-2, which was later improved to the SR-2M standard. The SR-2 and SR-2M are mostly similar but differ in various details. The vertical grip is screwed into place on the SR-2 while it folds into the forearm on the SR-2M. On the SR-2M the stock has been redesigned and can be folded and extended when a reflex sight is in place. The SR-2MP adds Picatinny accessory rails on top of the receiver.
