Description

Introduction

The Z-84 is a late Cold War era sub machine gun of Spanish origin. It was developed as a more modern alternative to the older sub machine guns in Spanish service. The design is heavily inspired by the Israeli Uzi, but differs in various areas. The Z-84 is even simpler and cheaper than the Uzi.

Design

The Z-84 is a blowback operated sub machine gun with that fires from the open bolt position. The wrap around bolt is located in the two piece stamped steel receiver. The magazine is inserted in the pistol grip and a folding stock is fitted. A safety switch and fire selector are fitted near the trigger. The design is very reliable but sacrifices some accuracy.

Firepower

The Z-84 fires the 9x19mm Parabellum round from a 25 or 30 round magazine. Reportedly it was also avaiable chambered in 9x23mm Largo. It fires semi-automatic or fully automatic at a rate of fire of 600 rpm. Maximum effective range is quoted to be 150 to 200 meters.

Users

The Z-84 was adopted by the Spanish armed forces and law enforcement. It is mostly used by naval units since it functions reliable after bein submerged in salt water. The Z-84 has also been exported in limited numbers to various nations.
