Introduction

The R-93 Tactical is a sniper rifle of German origin. It was developed in the early 1990's by Blaser Jagdwaffen for law enforcement use. The R-93 Tactical is derived from their line of hunting and sporting rifles. It is the first and up to this moment only tactical rifle by Blaser. Nowadays the weapon is marketed by SIG Sauer.

Design

The R-93 Tactical is a bolt action sniper rifle but differs in several key areas from the conventional bolt action design. The R-93 uses a straight pull bolt design which is much faster than the conventional bolt design that must both be rotated and pulled. The polymer furniture is ergonomically shaped and results in a limited weight. The optical sight is attached to the barrel and the whole barrel and sight group can be removed without losing zero.

Firepower

The R-93 Tactical fires the 7.62x51mm round from a 10 round magazine. The updated Tactical 2 model is also available in 5.56x45mm, .300 Winchester and .338 Lapua and uses smaller magazines. The straight pull bolt design allows for faster follow up shots than a conventional bolt action rifle. The maximum effective range with 7.62x51mm NATO is over 1.000 meters while the .338 Lapua version can be used out to 1.5 km. With quality ammunition sub MOA accuracy can be achieved.

Users

The R-93 Tactical is a popular sniper rifle although competition from the AW and TRG series is fierce. It is used by various law enforcement units and might be in limited military use. The R-93 is most common in Europe but is also used on various other continents.

Variants

R-93 Tactical

The Blaser R-93 Tactical is the original tactical model that was derived from the R-93 series of hunting and sporting rifles. It is only available in 7.62x51mm NATO. The original model is easily distinct from the updated model in having a higher and differently shaped receiver to house the 10 round magazine. Additionally the stock lacks a palm rest and the scope is mounted on a bracket.

R-93 Tactical 2

The Blaser R-93 Tactical 2 is an updated version of the original Tactical model. The overall design principle remains the same but many features have been improved. The most remarkable change is the availability in four calibers and the ability to interchange all calibers except .338 without losing zero since the scope is mounted directly onto the barrel. The Tactical 2 has a more ergonomic and thinner receiver and a Picatinny rail is used for mounting optics. Additional accessory rails and a silencer can be fitted.
