Description


Introduction

The Star 266 is a tactical truck of Polish origin. It was developed in the late 1970's to replace the older Star 660 truck. Since its introduction is has been the main workhorse of the Polish army. Production ceased in the year 2000 and the follow up model is the Star 1466.

Layout

The Star 266 is a much improved version of the Star 660. It has a more powerful engine, new cab and is able to carry more load. The Star 266 has a conventional layout. A forward control cab is installed and the engine is mounted underneath. A wide variety of body types can be installed. Normally a flatbed with drop sides and tarpaulin cover is fitted. It has been classified as a 3.5 t truck, but heavier loads can be carried when travelling over roads.

Mobility

The Star 266 has a good mobility due to its all wheel drive and large tires. The maximum speed is 90 km/h. A 147 hp diesel engine provides propulsion.

Firepower

The Star 266 is an unarmed vehicle in its role as a tactical truck. In Polish service it serves as a carrier and firing platform for the 23mm ZU-23 anti-aircraft gun. The crew and ammunition is carried on the vehicle as well. The Star 266 and ZU-23 combination is called the Hibneryt.

Protection

The Star 266 is not armored and has no mine protection, NBC system or smoke grenade disarchers.

Users

The primary user of the Star 266 is the Polish military. It has also been exported to several nations. The early production vehicles have aged and are in need of refitting or replacement. Late production models are expected to remain in use for more than a decade.

The Star 266 is a 3.5 t truck based on a 6x6 chassis with good off road capability. A wide variety of body types is available and include flatbed, 5 t crane, bucket excavator, chemical disinfection, pontoon bridge, smoke generator, fuel carrier and various command posts.
