Introduction

The T-122 is a multiple rocket launcher of Turkish origin. It was developed in the late 1990's for Turkish use and export sales. The launcher design is based on the highly successful Soviet BM-21 Grad and a range of long range rockets was developed to give the system an edge on the battlefield.

Layout

The T-122 is based on the MAN 26.372 military truck. It features a 40 round launcher for 122mm artillery rockets of the same type as used in the Soviet BM-21 Grad system. The TR-122 family of long range rockets has been developed for this system and for use on other 122mm Grad compatible systems. In the firing position jacks are lowered and a crane is fitted for use during reloading. A computerized fire control system is provided to reduce engagement time and increase accuracy.

Firepower

The T-122 can fire standard 122mm Grad rockets with a 20 km range of the TR-122 series with 40 km range that was specifically designed for use with this system. The accuracy is reasonably good and the rate of fire is 40 rounds in 80 seconds. Reloading takes about 10 minutes. A 12.7mm M2HB heavy machine gun is mounted for self-protection.

Protection

The T-122 is an unarmored system that is vulnerable to direct and indirect fire. The crew is exposed during firing and reloading. There are no NBC system or smoke grenade launchers.

Mobility

The MAN 6x6 truck chassis provides a good performance, both on roads and in the field. A 372 hp diesel engine provides propulsion. The maximum road speed is 75 km/h.

Users

The T-122 is in used with Turkey. The TR-122 family of long rang rockets have been exported to various nations, being used on a variety of launch platforms compatible with 122mm Grad rockets.

Variants

T-122 launch vehicle

T-122 (early model): Original production model based on MAN 26.281 6x6 chassis, introduced in 1997. Can be identified by standard truck cabin.
T-122 (late model): Late production model based on MAN 26.372 6x6 chassis introduced in 2005. Can be idenfied by large square cabin and longer wheelbase.
