Introduction

The PGZ95 is a modern self-propelled anti-aircraft gun of Chinese origin. It is the first of its kind to be adopted in numbers by the PLA. The PGZ95 has many design elements of the Italian SIDAM system, which is also fitted with four 25mm autocannon.

Layout

The PGZ95 is based on tracked chassis specifically designed for this system. The driver and commander are seated side by side in the hull behind the engine. The gunner is seated in the turret. On each side of the turret there are two 25mm autocannon and two QW-2 surface to air missiles.

Firepower

The main weapon system of the PGZ95 are the four 25mm Type 87 autocannon. They have a cyclic rate of fire of 600 to 700 rounds per minute each and can be used up to distances of 2.5 km. The four QW-2 missiles are similar in capabilities to the shoulder-launched variants. They are used to engage targets at longer range, up to 6 km or to a maximum altitude of 3.5 km.

Fire control

The fire control systems on the PGZ95 provide an all weather capability. On top of the turret the CLC-1 radar is fitted. It has a detection and tracking range of 11 km. An electro-optical fire control system is fitted at the front of the turret. This includes both a day time TV tracking camera and infra-red tracking camera. A laser range finder aids in distance estimation.

Protection

The armor on the PGZ95 protects the crew from small arms fire and shell splinters. On each side of the turret there is a bank of four smoke grenade launchers. It is likely that a NBC system is fitted.

Mobility

The tracked chassis provides the PGZ95 with good cross country mobility. The maximum speed is rather limited.

Users

The PGZ95 is the main self-propelled anti-aircraft gun in Chinese service. It is the first self-propelled anti-aircraft gun to be acquired in quantity. The PGZ95 may become available for exports in the future.

Variants

PGZ95

The PGZ95 is a self-propelled anti-aircraft gun. It is armed with a mixture of four 25mm autocannon and four QW-2 surface to air missiles. The electro optical fire control system and radar provide an all weather capability. There are no variants of the PGZ95 fire unit, except for the battery command post vehicle.

PGZ95 CP

The battery command post is based on the same tracked chassis as the PGZ95 fire unit. It has a raised roof to allow for more working space and is fitted with the large CLC-2 radar. This surveillance radar provides detection up to 45 km and up to an altitude of 4.5 km. Up to 5 km data can be exchanged digitally. A 12.7mm QJC88 heavy machine gun is fitted for self-defense.
