Introduction

The AK-100 is a naval gun turret of Soviet origin. It was developed in the 1970's as a more capable alternative to the 76mm AK-726 twin gun mount. Production has switched to the more capable A-190 naval gun turret. The A-190 is a further development of the AK-100 with a higher rate of fire.

Design

The AK-100 is a single barrel gun mount with a 100mm L/70 monobloc A-214 cannon. The high rate of fire is achieved by water cooling for the A-214 cannon and an automatic loading system. The large steel turret hold two ammunitions drums with a total of 174 rounds. The AK-100 is used in conjunction with the MR-114 or MR-145 fire control radar. Alternatively there is the remote optronic analog control system and the Kondensor-214A sight on the mount itself.

Firepower

The A-214 cannon fires a dedicated range of 100mm rounds at a maximum rate of fire of 50 to 60 rpm. Coastal and naval surface targets are engaged out to 21 km using HE-Fragmentation rounds with point detonation fuze. Aerial targets are engaged with either time fuzed or proximity fuzed HE-Anti Aircraft rounds. The maximum effective range is 10 km against aircraft and 5 km against incoming anti-ship missiles.

Users

The main user of the AK-100 naval gun turret was the Soviet navy. Nowadays it remains in service with Russia, India and Vietnam. The AK-100 was fitted to the following classes of ships:
- Project 1155 Fregat (Udaloy) class destroyer
- Project 1144 Orlan (Kirov) class battlecruisers, lead ship only
- Project 1154 Yastreb (Neustrashimy) class frigates - Project 1135M Burevestnik M (Krivak II) class
- Project 1135.1 Nerei (Krivak III) class
- Delhi class destroyer
- KBO 2000 class corvette

Variants

100mm AK-100

The AK-100 naval gun turret is produced in only a single version, no variants have been developed. The A-190 is a further development of the AK-100 that has a different turret shape and a higher rate of fire. The AK-100 is easily distinguished by its ogive turret shape and optronic sight positioned to the left of the gun.

100mm L/70 naval ammunition

For the AK-100 naval gun turret there are four types of ammunition available. These are also used in the A-190 naval gun turret.

A3-UOF-58: HE-Fragmentation round consisting of A3-OF-58 projectile and V-429 point detonation fuze. Used against naval surface targets and for coastal bombardment.
A3-UZS-58: HE-Anti Aircraft round consisting of A3-ZS-58 projectile and DVM-60M1 mechanical time fuze. Used against aircraft and surface vessels.
A3-UZS-58R: HE-Anti Aircraft round consisting of A3-ZS-58 projectile and AR-32 radio proximity fuze. Used against aircraft and anti-ship missiles.
A3-UCh-58: Inert training round, cannot be fired.
