Description

Introduction

The Mle 35S is a pre-World War 2 pistol of French origin. It was developed to meet a French military requirement in the mid 1930's. The Mle 35S lost out to the Mle 35A during the competition running from 1935 to 1937. Production was ordered nonetheless to alleviate in shortages in pistols in towards World War 2.

Design

The Mle 35S looks somewhat similar to the Mle 35A since both pistols are inspired by John Browning's M1911 design. The Mle 35S remains closer to the Browning design as it retains the locking system and recoil spring design. It is an all metal pistol with single stack magazine and plastic grip plates.

Firepower

The Mle 35S is a single action semi-automatic pistol. It fires the French 7.65x19.5mm Longue round from an 8 round single stack magazine. The accuracy is slightly less than the Mle 35A, but practical effectiveness is similar.

Users

The Mle 35S was produced in very limited numbers before the start of World War 2. Unlike the Mle 35A the Mle 35S was not produced during Nazi German occupation. The vast majority of Mle 35A were produced after World War 2 to equip the French military and various law enforcement organizations.
