Description

Introduction

The Scania SBA 111 is a series of Cold War era medium trucks of Swedish origin. They were developed in the late 1960's for a Swedish army requirement. The name SBA stands for "Special Bulldog Allwheeldrive". The 6x6 SBAT model adds Tandem to the abbreviation. The 111 code stands for "Generation 1, 11-liter engine".

Design

The Scania SBA is a conventional military truck with a distinctive square forward control cab. The 4x4 and 6x6 models have a 90% parts commonality. This feature is a achieved by using the same diesel engine, albeit a turbocharged one on the 6x6 model. All models are fitted with a 8 t winch.

Cargo capacity

The 4x4 and 6x6 models have a respective cargo capacity of 4.5 t and 6 t. Both models are available in flatbed cargo model. Unlike most other Western and Soviet trucks they are not fitted with tarpaulin covers. There are special models with a crew cab and reduced cargo area for towing guns, their crew and some ammunition. In Swedish service it is used to tow the FH-77 howitzer and KARIN coastal artillery cannon. Specialist vehicles with Giraffe radar, snow blower and airport firefighting equipment have been produced.

Mobility

The SBA series is powered by an 11 liter diesel engine. This provides the 4x4 model with 202 hp and the 6x6 model with 296 hp. The engine is connected to a 6 speed gear box with ranges for road and off road use. The all wheel drive and large wheels allow for good off road mobility. On roads the maximum speed is 85 km/h.

Users

The main user of the SBA series is Sweden, which ordered over 2.700 vehicles. Some 660 vehicles were sold to India when they ordered the FH-77 howitzer. Furthermore various small batches of vehicles were sold to Finland, the Middle East and Asia. Nowadays the SBA series remains in service, but are starting to grow old.
