Variants

The ML 3-inch mortar can be found in many configurations since all major sub assemblies come in multiple versions, which were also used in mixed configurations. The table on the right describes the three most common setups.

From introduction up to halfway World War 2 the ML 3-inch had a poor range of up to 1.45 km. The Mark 4 and 5 barrels were introduced during World War 2 and have a much increased range. For this reason these are also known as the Mark II Long Range mortar.

The early patterns of baseplate were rectangular. The No.5 and No.6 are square. The bipods were in Mark 3, 4 and 5 pattern.

The Mark 1 sight unit is the early pattern and the Mark 2 has a range scale drum.

Most common patterns of ML 3-inch mortar.

Mark 2 barrel
This is the pattern of barrel as introduced in the mid 1930's. The earlier Mark 1 and Mark 1A barrels have a similar performance. This early pattern uses the Mk 1 sight and No.1 rectangular baseplate. The maximum range is 1.450 meters.
Mark 4 barrel
The Mark 4 barrel was introduced around 1942 and allows for a more powerful charge to be used. This is indicated by a black band and red number 3 on the barrel. The maximum range is increased to 2.550 meters.
Mark 5 barrel
The Mark 5 barrel is a bit shorter than the Mark 4, but has the same increased range. This is the lightest of all the ML 3-inch barrels. The striker has been modified to be able to use German and Italian patterns of 81mm mortar ammunition. In conjunction with the Mark 5 barrel the lighter square No.5 baseplate is used, as is the Mk 2 sight unit.
