The RC-50 is an anti-materiel rifle of US origin. It was originally developed by Robar for civilian target shooting at long ranges. Since 12.7mm rifles started to be used by the military the RC-50 is also marketed for law enforcement and military use. The RC-50 was also promoted as a counter-sniper rifle.
The RC-50 is a bolt action rifle of a conventional design. The long and fluted barrel is fitted with an efficient muzzle brake, which is notably smaller than most muzzle brakes on 12.7mm rifles. The bolt is machined out of a single block of metal. A McMillan fiberglass stock is used and a bipod is fitted as standard. The original RC-50 has a fixed stock and the RC-50F a folding stock, but is otherwise the same. Many features can be built to user specification, such as the color of the fiberglass stock.
The RC-50 fires the 12.7x99mm round from a 5 round detachable box magazine. As a bolt action rifle its rate of fire is limited. Due to its long and heavy barrel its accuracy is very good and sub MOA accuracy can be achieved. With match ammunition targets out to 2.000 m can be engaged.
Aside from civilian sales the RC-50 was adopted by various law enforcement agencies in the USA, including the US Coast Guard. Several nations abroad also adopted the RC-50 in limited numbers.
The M87R is a contemporary competitor to the RC-50. This rifle follows a similar design pattern in being a bolt-action rifle with large muzzle brake in fiberglass stock.
