For a contract of the US Marine Corps the furniture and ergonomics of the South African MGL were upgraded by Milkor USA. The barrel is covered by a slotted barrel shroud that has been fitted with four Picatinny accessory rails. A retractable stock that functions similar to the one used on the M4 carbine is fitted. A new sight unit with an accessory rail on top is standard. With the new furniture the MGL Mk 1S with the chamber for 105 mm rounds is known as the MGL-105 and the Mk 1L for 140 mm rounds as the MGL-140.
The MGL-140 was adopted as the M32 MGL. The version that was adopted differed somewhat from the MGL-140 in having a large barrel shroud that mounts the four Picatinny rails. The M32 MGL is issued with the M2A1 reflex sight which can be adjusted for range.
Introduced in 2014 by Milkor USA, this is a variant of the M32 MGL with shorter 8 inch barrel, instead of 12 inch. This was adopted by USSOCOM as the Mk 14 Mod 0. Performance is reportedly similar to the M32 and it replaced the longer barrel version on the production line.
The MGL-105 and MGL-140 started out as licence produced and upgraded versions of the South African MGL Mk 1S and Mk 1L respectively.
