Variants

M4A1

M4 Sherman produced with a cast hull. Otherwise very similar to the original welded hull production model M4. Being the only M4 with a fully cast hull the M4A1 is easy to identify. The M4A1 is fitted with the same Continental R-975 radial engine as the M4. The M4A1 is known as the Sherman II in UK and Commonwealth service.

M4A1E9

Later World War 2 modification of existing vehicles with wider tracks in order to reduce ground pressure and improve mobility. This conversion included spacers between the hull and the vertical volute spring bogies. The wider tracks were deemed brittle and in post war service many were fitted with the original narrow tracks. The fenders feature similar extensions as found on HVSS Shermans.

M4A1E6(76)

Post World War 2 modification of existing stocks of M4A1 by US Ordnance military depots for export sales. A 76mm Gun M1A1 was installed in the original turret for the 75mm gun. These were acquired by Pakistan.
