Description

Introduction

The Type 90 is an armored recovery vehicle of Japanese origin. It was developed to support the Type 90 main battle tank and was adopted the same year.

Design

The Type 90 ARV is based on the chassis of the Type 90 main battle tank. The engine, drivetrain and many other components are in common with the Type 90 main battle tank. Instead of a turret it features a 25 t crane and a fixed superstructure for the four man crew. A 50 t winch is fitted and there is a dozer blade that doubles as an earth anchor.

Protection

The Type 90 ARV has a steel body with armored superstructure. The exact protection level isn't public, but it is known that it does not have composite armor. For self-defense smoke grenade dischargers are mounted at the front. A 12.7mm M2HB heavy machine gun is fitted on the roof.

Users

The Type 90 armored recovery vehicle was adopted by Japan to support the Type 90 main battle tank. A total of 30 vehicles were produced over 2 decades. The Type 90 remains in service today.
