The HK 416 is a modern era assault rifle of German origin. Originally developed at a niche request of US Delta Force, the HK 416 has grown to become one of the predominant offerings of Heckler & Koch today. The design combines the form factor of the AR-15 with an AR-18 style operating system. The HK 416 has a connotation of being suitable for arduous situations and if often used by special operations type units, next to infantry and law enforcement use.
The HK 416 is an update of the M4 platform that was aimed at improving long term reliability, especially of the shorter barrel models. The HK 416 combines the AR-15 layout, controls and modularity with a short stroke gas piston system akin to the G36. This improves reliable cycling and longevity at the cost of increased forward weight and snappier recoil. The HK 416 is available in multiple barrel lengths that span from compact models to full size rifles. When introduced the HK 416 was delivered by default with quad Picatinny rail forearm, flattop receiver and wide retractable stock. Over time newer newer furniture options were introduced, including slimline stock, HKEY or MLOK handguards, etcetera.
The HK 416 fires the 5.56x45mm NATO round from a 30 round magazines. By default the steel H&K high reliability magazine is offered, although various brands and magazine capacities can be used. Cyclic rate of fire is 700 to 900 rpm. Practical effective range depends on barrel length. The HK 416 is deemed reliable, although recoil can be a bit harsh. Barrels are often thicker than default in AR-15 designs. At the cost of weight this is more suitable for automatic fire and is safer in case of a stoppage.
The HK 416 was first used by special operations forces in US military service. Adoption has grown steadily over time to over 30 nations. Most often it is used by elite units law enforcement or military units, or by smaller military branches. The HK 416 was also adopted for large scale military service, for instance with Norway and France. It is also to become the next service rifle in Germany.
