Description

Introduction

The SCAR-SC is a modern era compact assault rifle of Belgian origin. It was developed from the SCAR family of firearms. As early as 2010 a prototype SCAR PDW was developed. The SCAR-SC is the most compact version of the SCAR currently on offer.

Design

The SCAR-SC is derived from the SCAR family of firearms and uses the same short stroke gas piston operating mechanism. The SC uses a shorter barrel in 5.56x45mm with quad accessory rails. A quick retractable stock was developed for the SC. When retracted it is slightly longer than a SCAR-L CQC with stock folded but does not double the weight. The SC is the first SCAR to be offered in .300 Blackout, uses a longer barrel than 5.56mm and is labeled as multi-caliber on the receiver. A Picatinny top rail is intended for use with optical sights, and flip-up back-up sights are offered by default. The SCAR-SC has practically all Mk 2 SCAR changes, including a non-reciprocating charging handle that can still be used as a forward assist.

Firepower

The SCAR-SC fires the 5.56x45mm NATO or .300 Blackout from a 30 round magazine. Cyclic rate of fire is 550 to 600 rpm for both models. The 5.56mm is more compact and has less recoil. The .300 model allows for more stopping power and can be used with either supersonic or subsonic ammunition types. Effective range of both models is quoted as 200 meters. The SCAR-SC cannot mount a grenade launcher or launch rifle grenades.

Users

The SCAR-SC has been adopted by multiple users in small quantities. These are mostly specialized law enforcement units and special operations forces.

Variants

SCAR-SC (5.56)

The SCAR-SC in 5.56x45mm NATO comes with a 7.5-inch barrel. A retractable stock was developed for the SCAR-SC, although various other options are available. Reportedly the regular SCAR adjustable side folding stock is now offered by default.

SCAR-SC (.300)

The SCAR-SC in .300 Blackout has a 9-inch barrel. Interestingly this is longer than the shortest options by competitors. Otherwise the version .300 is similar to the one in 5.56mm, including its options.
