Description

Introduction

The CheyTac M-200 Intervention is a modern era sniper rifle of US origin. The Intervention was developed as a private venture. The design is derived from the EDM Arms Windrunner and early models were produced by EDM for CheyTac. The Intervention uses a new cartridge specifically developed for long range accuracy, delivering better precision at long range than the .50 BMG. It was also marketed as a Long Range Rifle System (LRRS) including accessories like weather sensor, laser range finder and ballistic computer.

Design

The CheyTac M200 Intervention is derived from the EDM Windrunner M96. Instead of a 30-inch barrel and chambered in .50 BMG the Intervention uses a 29-inch barrel and the wildcat .408 CheyTac cartridge. Twelve years after introduction this cartridge was type certified by C.I.P. Being a derivative of the Windrunner, the M200 Intervention is a bolt-action sniper rifle with detachable magazine. A slanted Picatinny rail allows for a high magnification optical sight to be installed. The retractable stock is designed to reduce the length as much as possible. Unlike the Windrunner, the M200 Intervention has a longer barrel sleeve to allow the bipod to be mounted further forward. A large carry handle is located under the barrel.

Firepower

The Intervention is normally chambered for the .408 CheyTac cartridge, or alternatively for the .375 CheyTac. A seven round magazine is used. A 5 round capacity is available as well. The manufacturer claims sub MOA accuracy. Effective range is quoted as 2.300 yards for the .408 and over 2.500 yards for the .375 model. The multi-slotted muzzle brake reduces recoil. A suppressor can be installed instead to reduce the firing signature.

Users

The CheyTac Intervention has become an iconic firearm. It was the centerpiece in the movie Shooter and can be found in various popular video games. Military and law enforcement adoption seems to be somewhat limited. There seem to have been no sales to the US armed forces. Reported users in Europe include the Turkish special forces command, Czech 601st SFG, Greek combat divers Polish GROM special forces. A small number of rifles were acquired by South Korea.

Variants

M-100 Intervention

Early model of the Intervention. Possibly the M-100 was the Windrunner M-98 built specifically by EDM for CheyTac before CheyTac started their own production. Ealy models had a pepperpot muzzle brake and the bipod mounted near the receiver. Later M-100s had a large spigot that extends from the receiver to hold the bipod and a multi-slot muzzle brake.

M-200 Intervention

Baseline and by far the most common version. Introduced in 2001. Offered by default in .408 CheyTac and later also available in .375 CheyTac. This full size model has a 29-inch (737 mm) barrel. It was offered in a wide variety of coatings and camouflage.

M-200 Carbine

Shorter barrel variant of the M-200 Intervention. This was offered briefly alongside the full size model. This features a shorter 26-inch (660 mm) barrel. The barrel shroud is shorter and there is no carry handle.
