The Makarov PMM is a further development of the PM service pistol introduced in 1951. It fires higher pressure ammunition from a 12 round magazine.
The Yarygin PYa was adopted about a decade after the Makarov PMM to become the next standard issue pistol in Russian service. At that time the PMM had only partially replaced older handguns in Russian service.
