The Hatakaze class is a previous generation of air defense destroyer that was built a few years before the Kongo. Using rail and box launchers for its missiles and having a square superstructure these have a very different look than the reduced radar cross section Kongo class.
The Atago class is the successor to the Kongo class. The Atago class is two decks higher and is fitted with a hangar.
