Description
Introduction
The Type 97 is a pump-action shotgun of Chinese origin. It was developed in the late 1990's for domestic use and export sales. The Type 97 is closely patterned after the Remington M870 and many parts are interchangeable.
Design
The Type 97 is a conventional pump-action shotgun with tubular magazine below the barrel. All models feature a 5 round tubular magazine and heat shroud over the barrel. A fixed polymer stock or tubular folding stock is fitted.
Firepower
The Type 97 fires 12ga shotgun ammunition of both 2.75 and 3-inch length. The tubular magazine holds 5 rounds plus 1 in the chamber. The Type 97-2 uses a detachable box magazine that holds 5 rounds. Performance is similar to other pump-action shotguns.
Users
The Type 97-1 has been adopted by the People's Armed Police of China. It is also exported, mostly on the civilian market.
Variants
Type 97-1
The Type 97-1 very similar to currect law enforcement models of the Remington M870. All models feature a 5 round tubular magazine and heat shroud over the barrel. The stock is either fixed, foldable or absent. Various civilian models also exist and may feature a longer barrel and wooden stock.
Type 97-2
The Type 97-2 is very similar to the Type 97-1, but uses a plastic detachable box magazine that holds 5 rounds. The tubular magazine is retained as rail for the slider but holds no rounds. Therefore the tubular magazine does not extend al the way to the muzzle.

Norinco 982

Bullpup Type 97
A bullpup model of the Type 97 was developed. It uses the same magazine of the Type 97-2 and a fixed flashlight acts as slider for the pump action mechanism.
