The Glock 17L and Glock 34 are competition pistols of Austrian origin. The Glock 17L was introduced as a target pistol in 1988. The Glock 34 was introduced exactly a decade later.
The Glock 17L and Glock 34 series are mechanically similar to the full size Glock 17 pistol. The barrel and slide are longer. Early Glock 17L featured a ported barrel. The trigger pull is slightly lighter. The rear sight is adjustable. The Glock 34 is made to fit within the size limits for competition shooting. It also has a longer slide and barrel, but is not as long as the Glock 17L.
The longer barrel increases muzzle velocity somewhat. Much of the increased accuracy comes from improved ergonomics, not the slightly improved mechanical accuracy. The longer sight radius and ported barrel make the competition pistols easier to use for a trained individual.
The Glock 17L and Glock 34 series are intended for civilian sport shooting. A small number has been adopted by special units of law enforcement agencies. SWAT and counter terrorism units are some of the few units that have the training intensity to benefit from the characteristics of a competition pistol over a regular standard frame pistol.
The Glock 17L target series and Glock 34 competition series are derived from the full size Glock 17 design.
