The Wegmann naval gun mount is a Cold War era self-defense weapon of German origin. It is a somewhat heavier alternative to the Rheinmetall S-20 gun mount. Both mounts are fitted with the same autocannon, but the Wegmann mount uses a twin belt feed mechanism.
The Wegmann naval gun mount is a pedestal mount with a single 20mm Rh-202 Type 2 autocannon. This is the double feed model and a belt box is located on either side of the gun. An adjustable shoulder mount helps the gunner to rotate and elevate the gun. A sight with lead indication helps in targeting aerial targets. A gun shield provides a degree of protection from small arms fire.
The Rh-202 autocannon fires the 20x139mm NATO round at cyclic rate of fire of about 1.000 rpm. This double feed weapon has two 100 round belts ready to fire. Each belt can contain a different type of ammunition, such as HEI-T and APDS. The operator can quickly switch between belt type. Effective range is 2 km against surface targets and 1.5 km against aerial targets. The sea state, visibility, target size and movement have a strong influence on practical range and hit rate.
The Wegmann gun mount was mainly intended as a self-defense naval mount for smaller vessels, such as landing craft and patrol boats. It was adopted by West Germany in 1977 and has been exported to several nations. In German service this has been replaced by the more capable and unmanned MLG-27.
The Wegmann naval mount is fitted with a single 20mm Rheinmetall Rh-202 autocannon.
The Wegmann mount was introduced only two years of the Rheinmetall S-20, which is a lighter mount with a single feed variant of the Rh-202 autocannon.
In German service many Wegmann naval mounts have been replaced by the MLG-27, which is remote controlled and fires a larger projectile at a higher rate of fire.
The Oerlikon GAM-B01 naval mount is rather similar to the Wegmann MK 20, being a a pedestal mounted 20mm autocannon with a single operator.
