Description

Introduction

The UMP is a modern sub machine gun of German origin. It was developed in the 1990's by Heckler & Koch to replace the MP5 on the production line. Even though the MP5 is one of the most appreciated sub machine gun designs, it was lacking in two areas: production cost is high and ability to accessorize is lacking in some areas. The UMP solved both issues, but in turn lacks the ergonomics the roller delayed blowback mechanism of the MP5. For that reason the MP5 remains in production.

Design

The UMP is a simple blowback operated sub machine gun, which is a departure from the roller delayed blowback mechanism used in the MP5. The simple blowback mechanism makes the UMP cheaper to produce. The use of polymer reduced weight and cost even further. The MP5 was modular, but lacked in standardized accessories. The UMP uses a long Picatinny rail on top to mount optics. Accessory rails on the forearm allow for lasers, lights and vertical grips. The polymer stock can be folded to the side.

Firepower

The UMP45 was the first model to be introduced, firing the .45 ACP from a 25 round magazine. This model was aimed at the American law enforcement market. The cyclic rate of fire differs whether 230 grain or 185 grain ammunition is used. The UMP45 was followed by the UMP40, chambered in .40 Smith & Wesson and using a 30 round magazine. The most common variant is the UMP9. This uses the 9x19mm Parabellum round in a curved 30 round magazine.

Users

The UMP45 and UMP40 were aimed at the US law enforcement market. These calibers are (or were) popular among SWAT teams, which often used a larger caliber sidearm than regular patrol officers. Even though the large caliber variants are well known and rather unique, the majority of UMPs have been produced in 9x19mm. The 9mm models are commonly used in Europe and Asia. Even though the UMP was produced in quantity, it never was as successful as the MP5.

The UMP was developed to replace the MP5 on the production line. Although cheaper, the UMP never did replace the MP5 since the MP5 has qualities many end users proved comfortable to pay a premium for.
