M163 Vulcan
The M163 Vulcan is a self-propelled anti-aircraft gun of US origin. Also known as the Vulcan Air Defense System (VADS), it was developed to replace the M42 Duster in US service. The M163 was complemented by the Chaparral self-propelled surface to air missile system in US service. The M163 packs powerful armament that is only of limited use against aircraft due to the lack of automated fire control.
S-300V
The S-300V is a late Cold War era surface to air missile system of Soviet origin. It is a complex and capable system intended to protect army formations in the field from aerial threats and inbound cruise missiles and short range ballistic missiles. There are two NATO reporting names: SA-12A Gladiator for the smaller 9M83 missile and SA-12B Giant for the larger 9M82 missile. The GRAU index for the entire system is 9K81. The name S-300V refers to Vojska ("army") and ended up as a completely different design than the S-300P series developed for the air defense forces.
Project 636 Varshavyanka class
Project 636 Varshavyanka is a class of diesel-electric attack submarines of Russian origin. In the West these ships are known as the "Improved Kilo class". The name Varshavyanka refers to the Warsaw pact. This class was initially developed for export to Warsaw Pact nations. After the fall of the Soviet Union the final stages of the development were financed by China, which is the major export customer for this class.
Project 1144 Orlan class
The Project 1144 Orlan is a late Cold War era class of cruiser of Soviet origin. The name Kirov is the Western designation for the Project 1144 Orlan (Sea Eagle). This is the largest class of missile cruiser ever developed. This was due to ever increasing demands for armament and sensors for all domains: surface warfare, aera air defense and anti-submarine warfare. In Russia this type of ship is referred to as a heavy nuclear powered missile cruiser. Due to its size and displacement the Project 1144 class is sometimes referred to as a battlecruiser.
