The TMA-83 is a larger and more powerful alternative that replaced the earlier TAR-76 on the production line.
In Romanian service the TMA-83 supplemented a much larger number of Soviet designed and Czechoslovak built ATS-59G. Both vehicles are very similar at first sight, but the TMA-83 has a larger cab and the drive sprocket is at the rear.
