Description
Introduction
The FIAT 6605 is a Cold War era tactical truck of Italian origin. It was developed by FIAT in the 1960's to provide the Italian army with an artillery tractor.
Design
The FIAT 6605 is a large and heavy 6x6 truck with large single tires. It has a forward control layout with the six men crew cabin mounted over the engine. A flatbed and winch are located at the rear. The FIAT 6605 is unarmed and unarmored. The artillery tractor is the standard model, but cargo and recovery versions have also been developed. These feature a shorter cab that seats two people.
Cargo capacity
The artillery tractor model is able to tow a large howitzer such as the FH-70, its associated crew and up to 5 t of cargo. The cargo version allows up to 8.5 t of cargo and comes in a variety of versions, including several types of tankers. The recovery variant is fitted with a heavy winch system.
Mobility
The 6x6 chassis and large tires provide a good off road mobility, albeit at limited speeds. For todays standards the power to weight ratio is limited. The 260 hp diesel engine allows for a maximum road speed of 80 km/h.
Users
The FIAT 6605 was adopted by the Italian military. It was also exported to the Middle East and Africa. It remains in Italian service but given the conflicts in Iraq, Somalia and Libya foreign use is highly limited nowadays.
Variants
FIAT 6605 TM
The FIAT 6605 TM is the original model of the FIAT 6605 series. It is an artillery tractor with large crew cabin and flatbed with tarpaulin cover. The maximum tow weight is 15 t.
FIAT 6605 FH
The FIAT 6605 FH is similar to the artillery tractor model but is optimized for ammunition transport. Behind the cabin a hydraulic crane is mounted, making the cargo area shorter.
FIAT 6605 A
The FIAT 6605 A is the cargo truck version of the FIAT 6605 series. It has a shorter cab and can be fitted with a variety of body types. The flatbed version with tarpaulin roof is the most common version.
Body types available: flatbed with tarpaulin cover, command post, 10.500 L fuel tanker, 8.000 L water tanker, aircraft fuel tanker.
FIAT 6605 AG
The FIAT 6605 AG is the recovery variant of the FIAT 6605 series. It is fitted with a smaller cab than the TM and has a large winch installed at the rear. The recovery version is longer due to the forward mounted secondary winch.
