The TRG-42 and TRG-22 are modern era sniper rifles of Finnish origin. These are a further development of the TRG-41 generation and were first introduced in 1999. The TRG-42 is a direct competitor to bolt-action sniper rifles such as the Arctic Warfare Magnum, PGM 338 and APR 338.
The TRG-42 and TRG-22 are a further development of the TRG-41 and TRG-21 respectively. Many parts are interchangeable. The main update was the new ergonomic stock and new muzzle brake on the TRG-42. These are bolt-action sniper rifles with free floating barrel that feed from a detachable magazine. Over time the development of this generation continued by adding new barrel lengths, a folding stock option, various types of accessory rail systems and new chassis system.
The TRG-42 is most commonly chambered in .338 Lapua Magnum and feeds from a 5 round magazine. Alternatively it is chambered for .300 Winchester Magnum feeding from a 7 round magazine. The TRG-22 uses a shorter action and fires the 7.62x51mm NATO round from a 10 round magazine. Accuracy of these rifles is good. The factory acceptance test is 0.5 MOA for the TRG-22 and sub 1 MOA for the TRG-42.
The TRG-42 and TRG-22 have been adopted by various military and law enforcement users. These are mainly located in Europe, but can also be found in Asia and the Middle East. The TRG-42 in .338 Lapua seems to be the most common model in military user. The TRG-22 is the most common model in law enforcement use.
The TRG-22 is the baseline short action variant that was introduced in 1999. It is chambered in 7.62x51mm NATO and feeds from a 10 round magazine. It is available with 66 cm and 51 cm barrel length and since around 2007 it is available with a folding adjustable stock.
In 2018 the TRG-22 A1 was introduced, which features a new chassis. This has a long Picatinny rail on top and M-LOK octagonal forearm. An adjustable skeletonized folding stock is fitted as standard. It comes with a 60 cm or 51 cm barrel length.
The TRG-42 is the baseline long action variant that was introduced in 1999. It is available in .300 Winchester Magnum with a 7 round magazine and .338 Lapua Magnum with a 5 round magazine. The TRG-42 can be easily identified since it is normally fitted with a large multi-slotted muzzle brake.
Around 2007 the folding stock variants of the TRG-42 and TRG-22 were introduced. These feature a skeletonized side folding stock with rear monopod. It seems that over the years the folding stock design has been updated twice. Along with the folding stock short barrel options for the TRG-42 were introduced as well.
In 2018 the TRG-42 A1 was introduced, which features a new chassis. This has a long Picatinny rail on top and M-LOK octagonal forearm. An adjustable skeletonized folding stock is fitted as standard.
