Description

Introduction

The Type 07 is a modern era naval anti-submarine warfare system of Japanese origin. It was developed as a longer range and more capable alternative to the American RUM-139 VL-ASROC which is operated in large numbers by the JMSDF.

Design

The Type 07 follows a similar design pattern as the RUM-139 VL-ASROC. A lightweight torpedo is carried in the nose of the rocket. An inertial navigation system guides the rocket towards the target area. A rocket booster section provides initial altitude and thrust vector control points the missile towards the target. The main rocket motor propels the Type 07 to a speed just over Mach 1.

Firepower

The Type 07 has a Type 97 or Type 12 lightweight torpedo as its lethal payload. This is released at the predetermined target area. The range is reportedly over 30 km and unlike the VL-ASROC it is supersonic in flight. The Type 97 torpedo is best suited to engage deep diving submarines in open water, whereas the Type 12 is aimed at engaging submarines in shallower coastal waters.

Users

The Type 07 is used by the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force. It is fitted on newer classes of destroyers. The Type 07 is not offered for export sales.
