The first mortar carrier to be developed from the SU 60 armored personnel carrier was the SV 60. The chassis is similar to the SU 60, but the rear compartment mounts a 81mm m1 mortar that fires to the rear through two large doors. A bipod and baseplate are carried allowing the mortar to be used away from the vehicle.
The SX 60 is similar to the SV 60 in concept, but is fitted with a 107mm M2 mortar and carries less ammunition. It can be distinguished from the SV 60 as it lacks the bow machine gun. A bipod and baseplate are carried allowing the mortar to be used away from the vehicle.
Both SV 60 and SX 60 are based on the SU 60 armored personnel carrier, which is modified to fire the mortar through the roof hatches, or away from the vehicle.
The SV 60 is armed with the American 81mm M1 mortar. This has a range of 3 km with light shells. A total of 100 shells are carried, of which 24 in a ready rack.
The SX 60 is armed with the American 107mm M2 mortar. This has a range of 4 km. A total of 50 shells are carried, of which 18 in a ready rack.
Both SV 60 and SX 60 are armed with a roof mounted 12.7mm M2HB heavy machine gun for self-defense.
The SV 60 retains the .30 M1919A4 bow machine gun of the SU 60. This is no longer fitted on the SX 60.
Both SV 60 and SX 60 were replaced in Japanese service by the Type 96 tracked self-propelled mortar. This mounts a larger caliber and longer range 120mm mortar.
