Over 20 variants of the An-26 have been produced. Most variants had only one or two aircraft converted. Some of these are prototypes that were to be produced in series, such as the An-26A assault transport or An-26D long range variant with external fuel tanks.
Many others are specialist variants to test equipment, such as anti-submarine warfare sensors, laser targeting systems, communications equipment, navigation calibration, flying hospital, weather control and arctic surveillance.
Successor to the An-26 with uprated engines, higher ceiling and improved cargo capacity.
The Canadian DHC-5 is a contemporary aircraft with roughly similar size and transport capacity.
