The Bgbv 82 is a Cold War era armored recovery vehicle of Swedish origin. It was developed in the 1960's to support medium weight armored vehicles, such as the S-tank entering service. The modified Pbv 302 chassis for the Bgbv 82 was later reused in the Ikv 91 assault gun.
The Bgbv is based on the chassis of the Pbv 302 tracked armored personnel carrier. The chassis was modified by adding an extra roadwheel, fitting a new gear box and a similar but more powerful engine. The engine is located at the center of the vehicle and the drive sprocket was relocated to the rear. The four crew members are seated in the forward compartment. The rear compartment over the engine are used to store a variety of tools in addition to the recovery equipment.
A dozer blade is fitted at the front. Two spades are located at the rear. These are lowered as stabilizers when using the crane. When recovering a heavy vehicle using the winch the spades are driven into the ground to act as an earth anchor. The 20 t winch can be used to a maximum 60 t capacity. A 5.5 t capacity hydraulic crane can be used for various duties, such as replacing an engine.
The one man turret of the Pbv 302 was retained. A 20mm Hispano-Suiza HS.404 autocannon is fitted. This can be used against ground targets and helicopters. A total of 505 rounds are carried.
The steel armor protects the crew from 20mm autocannon fire over the frontal arc. Protection from small arms fire and shell splinters is all around. There is no NBC system. Operating the recovery equipment requires the crew to exit the vehicle.
The Bgbv 82 proved to have good mobility in the field. Maximum speed on roads is somewhat low at 56 km/h. The Volvo diesel engine produces 310 hp. Bgbv 82 is amphibious in the right conditions.
The Bgbv 82 was operated by Sweden and was never exported. A total of 24 vehicles were delivered from 1972 to 1973. One vehicle was issued to each tank company operating the S-tank. This vehicle served until 1994.
The lengthened and rear engine chassis of the Bgbv 82 served as the chassis for the Ikv 91 assault gun / tank destroyer which is armed with a 90mm gun.
