A total of 40 RIM-66B, and later RIM-66E, Standard SM-1MR medium range surface to air missiles are carried in the magazine of the Mk 13 GMLS. An update to SM-2MR missiles was considered but never applied.

The Kongo class destroyer was the next class of air defense destroyer for the JMSDF. These are more capable than the Hatakaze with their later generation Standard missiles and AEGIS radar.
