The R5 RGP is a modern assault rifle of US origin. It was introduced by Remington in 2006 and is aimed at the US law enforcement market. The name RGP stands for "Remington Gas Piston" to distinguish it from regular AR-15 pattern rifles.
The R5 RGP is externally patterned after the AR-15 design and many of the numerous aftermarket parts can be fitted. Instead of direct impingement a short stroke gas piston is used. The non-regulated gas piston allows for the use of suppressors. The upper receiver is of a monolithic design and the barrel is free floating. Accessories can be fitted on the Picatinny rail on top and MLOK attachment points on the handguard.
The R5 RGP fires the 5.56x45mm NATO round from STANAG type magazines. These usually hold 30 rounds but many types are available. The practical effective range is about 300 meters.
The R5 RGP is aimed at the US law enforcement market. In semi-automatic form it is also for sale for civilian use.
There are no real variants of the R5 RGP, but it is available with either 10.5 and 14.5 inch barrel. As with many modern AR-15 style rifles many types of accessories can be fitted to customize each firearm.
The R5 RGP looks very similar to the M4 carbine and has similar ergonomics and operating procedures.
