Description

Introduction

The M1911 is a pistol of US origin. It was developed in the early 1900's by John Browning and produced by Colt. The M1911 became a famous pistol that served with US forces in both World Wars. Despite its age it remains in use today. Over the years many derivatives have been developed.

Design

The M1911 is a short recoil operated single action pistol. It is made out of metal, except for the grip plates. The M1911 fires the .45 ACP round that was specifically designed for this pistol.

Firepower

The M1911 fires the .45 ACP round from a 7 round single stack magazine. The M1911 fires semi-automatic only and has an effective range of 50 meters. Many versions and derivatives of the M1911 have been developed. Most retain the .45 caliber and 7 round magazine, but various high capacity models and variants in other calibers exist.

Users

The first and foremost user of the M1911 is the United States. The M1911 served in both World Wars and many other conflicts. As a standard issue pistol it has been replaced by the Beretta 92F, but inewer models remain in use with various special forces units. The M1911 was adopted by many nations, mostly in South America, Europe, Africa and Asia. The M1911 was also popular for law enforcement use, although most have been replaced by medium caliber pistols.
