The Type 89 is a heavyweight torpedo of Japanese origin. It is launched from submarines against both submarines and surface vessels. The Type 89 is reportedly based on the earlier Type 72 design, incorporating some features of the Type 80. The Type 89 reportedly has very similar characteristics to the US Mark 48 Mod 4 ADCAP. With over 30 years in service the Type 89 is in need of replacement. The G-RX6 design project should result in a next generation heavyweight torpedo for Japan.
The Type 89 has a conventional layout with the homing section in the nose. This is followed by the warhead and the engine. Propulsion and control surfaces are at the rear. The Type 89 is powered by a swash-plate piston engine.
The Type 89 uses both passive and active accoustic homing. Mid course updates are provided via wire guidance. The Type 89 is mostly intended for use in deep water. The next generation Japanese heavyweight torpedo is to increase performance in coastal shallow waters.
The Type 89 has a 267 kg warhead with proximity fuse. The maximum speed is about 55 kt. Reports of speeds up to 70 kt are unlikely to be correct. The Type 89 and especially the Type 89B are deep diving torpedoes with an operational depth of over 500 m and 900 m respectively. Effective range is 27 nm at 40 kt and 21 nm at 55 kt.
The Type 89 is launched from a whole range of modern Japanese submarines. The Type 89 is currently in use on the Soryu class and Oyashio class. The Type 89 was also used by the Harushio and Yushio classes, both currently out of service.
The Type 89 is used only by the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force on submarines. Per Japanese policy the Type 89 is not available for export.
