The AK-100 is a naval gun turret of Soviet origin. It was developed in the 1970's as a more capable alternative to the 76mm AK-726 twin gun mount. Production has switched to the more capable A-190 naval gun turret. The A-190 is a further development of the AK-100 with a higher rate of fire.
The AK-100 is a single barrel gun mount with a 100mm L/70 monobloc A-214 cannon. The high rate of fire is achieved by water cooling for the A-214 cannon and an automatic loading system. The large steel turret hold two ammunitions drums with a total of 174 rounds. The AK-100 is used in conjunction with the MR-114 or MR-145 fire control radar. Alternatively there is the remote optronic analog control system and the Kondensor-214A sight on the mount itself.
The A-214 cannon fires a dedicated range of 100mm rounds at a maximum rate of fire of 50 to 60 rpm. Coastal and naval surface targets are engaged out to 21 km using HE-Fragmentation rounds with point detonation fuze. Aerial targets are engaged with either time fuzed or proximity fuzed HE-Anti Aircraft rounds. The maximum effective range is 10 km against aircraft and 5 km against incoming anti-ship missiles.
The main user of the AK-100 naval gun turret was the Soviet navy. Nowadays it remains in service with Russia, India and Vietnam. The AK-100 was fitted to the following classes of ships:
- Project 1155 Fregat (Udaloy) class destroyer
- Project 1144 Orlan (Kirov) class battlecruisers, lead ship only
- Project 1154 Yastreb (Neustrashimy) class frigates
- Project 1135M Burevestnik M (Krivak II) class
- Project 1135.1 Nerei (Krivak III) class
- Delhi class destroyer
- KBO 2000 class corvette
Russian class of frigate. NATO reporting name is Neustrashimyy class. Single AK-100 turret on the bow.
Indian class of destroyer. Three ships in class. Single AK-100 turret on the bow.
Soviet class of anti-submarine warfare destroyer. NATO reporting name is Udaloy class. Two AK-100 turret are located superfiring on the bow.
Soviet class of nuclear powered cruiser. NATO reporting name is Kirov class. First ship in class was fitted with two AK-100 turrets at the rear superstructure in front of the landing pad.
The French series of Creusot-Loire naval gun turrets have a similar 100mm caliber. They are lighter and have a slightly higher rate of fire, but their maximum range is less than the AK-100.
In several classes of ships a double 100mm AK-100 turret set-up was replaced by a single 130mm AK-130 double barrel naval gun in subsequent designs.
