Description

Introduction

The Galil MAR is a compact assault rifle of Israeli origin. It is the latest addition to the original Galil line-up of firearms, being developed in the early 1990's. MAR stands for Micro Assault Rifle, but it is also referred to as the Micro Galil. Upon introduction there were some teething issues, mostly related to

Design

The MAR (Micro Assault Rifle) is the smallest variant of the Galil family. It was developed for use by special forces and non-infantry personnel such as vehicle crews. The MAR has a very short barrel and gas piston and is therefore only available in 5.56mm NATO. The long stroke gas piston system was rearranged for reliable cyclic even though the barrel is very short. The latest version has a redesigned handguard which resists heat better.

Firepower

The MAR fires the 5.56x45mm NATO round from a 35 round magazine. The cyclic rate of fire is 600 to 750 rpm, a bit higher than the full size rifles. Effective range is about 200 meters. Unlike other variants of the Galil it also has a 3 round burst setting.

Users

The MAR wasn't adopted by the IDF, but is issued to Israeli police. The MAR was mostly aimed at the export market. In several nations it is issued to special units in military or law enforcement. With the introduction of the Galil ACE and its short barrel variants the MAR seems to be out of production.
