The 9K338 Igla-S is a modern era man portable SAM system of Russian origin. The Igla-S is a modernization of the earlier Igla with more range, better seeker and heavier warhead.
The Igla-S is a further development of the earlier Igla. The Igla-S has a much improved range. This is achieved by using a more powerful propellant. This also allows for a warhead with twice as much explosive power, making the Igla-S more effective in a near miss. The dual mode passive infrared homing seeker is reportedly more effective against targets with smaller hear signatures. Resistance against flares has improved as well.
Maximum effective range is improved to 6 km. Maximum altitude is 3.5 km. The continuous rod warhead has doubled in weight and has a proximity, grazing and impact fuse. Maximum target speed is quoted as 400 m/s for approaching targets and 320 m/s for receding targets.
9K338 Igla-S has been offered for export since its inception. An unknown number was acquired by Russia, although 9K333 Verba is to be the main successor of the older 9K38 Igla and its predecessors. Most Igla-S seem to have been produced for export sales. India, Jordan and Venezuela acquired the Igla-S in quantity. Various nations in Asia, the Middle East and South America acquired Igla-S.
The 9K338 Igla-S is an improved version of the original 9K38 Igla (NATO: SA-18 Grouse).
The 9K333 Verba is a newer and more improved version of the Igla. It has a triple spectrum seeker. NATO reporting name is: SA-29 Gizmo.
