System composition

2P16 launch vehicle

Launch vehicle for a single 3R9 or 3R10 rocket. Based on the chassis of the PT-76 light tank and it retains its amphibious capacity. In Soviet service a battery was equipped with 3 launch vehicles.

2U663 transloader

Single axle trailer with carry capacity for two rockets. Tranported by ZiL-157V 6x6 tractor truck. The rockets are loaded onto the 2P16 launch vehicle using a K-51 truck mounted crane. A battery of 3 launch vehicles would be supported by 3 transloaders and 2 cranes.

3R9 rocket

Artillery rocket with conventional warhead. Known as FROG-3 in the West. Can be identified by its pointed nose and having the same diameter as the rocket itself. Since it is lighter and more aerodynamic than the 3R10 it has a longer maximum range of 44.5 km.

3R10 rocket

Artillery rocket with nuclear warhead. Known as FROG-5 in the West. Due to higher drag and increased weight it has a shorter maximum range of 32 km. The warhead has a variable yield of 3, 10 or 20 kT. The 3R11 rocket has an inert warhead and is used for training.

PRTB-1

Set of vehicles for field maintenance and preparation of nuclear warheads. Also known as 2U659. Used to support troops with 3R10 rockets with nuclear warhead. During preparation the yield is selected. The ZiL-157 vehicles with storage facility also control the temperature of the warheads.
