The M101/33 is a towed howitzer of Dutch origin. It is an upgrade program for existing M101 towed howitzer, which were produced in the United States during and after World War 2. A similar 33-caliber upgrade was developed in France.
The M101/33 upgrade replaces the older 22-caliber barrel with a 33-caliber one with a muzzle brake. Additionally a newer range of ammunition is offered. The longer barrel increases the range, especially when combined with rocket assisted ammunition. Other than the barrel the M101 remains mostly unaltered. In order to reduce stress on the carriage the shield is either removed or cut down in size.
The original M101 achieved a maximum range of 11.2 km. This is improved to 15.7 km with regular ammunition, or to 19.5 km using rocket assisted projectiles.
A 6x6 truck is normally used to tow the gun and to carry the crew and ammunition.
The M101/33 upgrade was acquired by Canada and Chile. In Canadian service the M101/33 is known as the C3.
The M101/33 is an upgrade of existing M101 howitzer. The old 22-caliber ordnance is replaced by a 33-caliber one.
