The Type 11 is a modern armored recovery vehicle of Japanese origin. It was developed to support the Type 10 main battle tank and is based on the same chassis. The design was approved for service in 2011, and the first series production vehicle was accepted in 2013.
The Type 11 is based on the Type 10 main battle tank chassis and retains the hydropneumatic suspension. The two man crew is seated in the armored superstructure on the front left of the vehicle. A large crane is fitted at the front right. The dozer blade at the front can be used to remove obstacles. The dozer blade also acts as outrigger when the 25 t crane is in use. The dozer blade also acts as an earth anchor when the powerful winch is used. For self-defense a roof mounted 12.7mm M2HB heavy machine gun and smoke grenade dischargers are fitted.
The Type 11 is produced in small numbers and is in use with the Japanese Ground Self-Defense Force. In accordance with Japanese policy the Type 11 ARV is not offered for export.
The Type 11 ARV was developed to support the Type 10 main battle tank. Both vehicles use a similar chassis and many automotive parts are interchangeable.
