The ZSL92A is a wheeled armored personnel carrier of Chinese origin. It was developed in the mid 1990's to equip highly mobile light mechanized brigades. This variant is also exported to several nations, since it is cheaper and simpler than many other vehicles based on the WZ551 chassis.
The ZSL92A is derived from the ZSL92 infantry fighting vehicle. Both vehicles are nearly similar, but differ in the type of armament that is fitted. Instead of an overhead weapon station with an autocannon a simple one man turret is fitted. This makes the ZLS92A simpler, cheaper and it has more internal volume.
The ZSL92A is fitted with a one man turret with a 12.7mm QJC88 heavy machine gun. It has 50 rounds ready to fire and more are carried inside.
The steel armor protects the crew from small arms fire and shell splinters. Armor piercing rounds fired from a heavy machine gun are able to penetrate the hull. An NBC system is fitted. Two banks of smoke grenade launchers are fitted to the turret. The tires are of the run flat type and allow travel at reduced speeds for 100 km when punctured.
The ZSL92A has a good mobility on roads and a reasonable performance off road. A Deutz 320 hp diesel engine provides propulsion. The maximum speed on roads is 90 km/h and the range is up to 800 km. The ZSL92 is fully amphibious and is powered in the water by two steerable propellers behind the rear wheels.
The ZSL92A was adopted by the light mechanized brigades of the Chinese People's Liberation Army in the mid 1990's. It is used alongside other vehicles based on the WZ551 chassis.
The ZSL92A is a variant of the ZSL92 infantry fighting vehicle. Both vehicles use the same WZ551 6x6 chassis, but the ZSL92A uses a much simpler one man open roof turret.
In Chinese service the ZSL92A is armed with a 12.7mm QJC88 heavy machine gun.
