Original production model. Produced from 1947 for trials purposes and briefly in the early 1950's in series. The early model had six smaller roadwheels with three track return rollers.
Main production model that was introduced in the mid 1950's Fitted with five large spoke roadwheels and lacking track return rollers. Since 1962 two additional fuel tanks were installed for an increased autonomous range. This version may be called AT-LA. Possibly AT-LA refers to the 5 roadwheel upgrade and AT-LM is the updated production variant.
The list on the right hand side lists the types of towed weapon systems for which the AT-LM was often employed.
The AT-LM was often employed instead of regular tactical trucks in Siberian or marchland areas of the Soviet Union. Soviet oriented states in Asia and the Middle East often received the AT-LM due to the difficult terrain.
The AT-L entered series production in the same year as the AT-S, which is the medium counterpart to the lighter AT-L.
